Cavendish, Pepys, and the Zombie Kiss of 1666

Samuel Pepys, amateur scientist and Navy Secretary, has lost his wife, Elizabeth, to the London plague of 1666. Margaret Cavendish's anti-plague julep is a sure remedy for this scourge, but it requires generous amounts of Sam's blood. The plan is to employ Robert Boyle's pump to drain the poor Navy Secretary dry -- after Sam's carnality has been brought to a boil by the blandishments of Aphra Behn and others. Elizabeth Pepys, looking much the zombie, rides to the rescue of her beleaguered husband and a flurry of neck biting ensues, ending in a relaxing evening at the famed Hell Fire Club. The Legend of Um Elmagareen

From the deep Egyptian province, the story begins with Safaan, the governor of Um Elmagareen village, after what happened with Bahana, the blear-eyed girl and Safaan's foster daughter. She came at three a.m. and told him that she saw Um Eltananeen (an ancient goddess) in her dream telling her that Saafan has a pharaoh ancestor who died 5000 years ago. Safaan did not understand anything. How with a blink of an eye a pharaoh grandfather pops up into his life just like this. Too crazy to be real. Safaan took all her narrative as a silly joke. Next day, during the happy morning hours, Safaan remembered to tell Bahana to stop her silly stuff about her pharaoh dream fantasies, but it seems Bahana was not the only person that was present; someway somehow, Um Eltananeen has captured her body and started to talk through her saying many gibberish words. Safaan could not understand anything. Right after Um Eltananeed left her body, he found a piece of papyrus on Bahana's lap. It is a perilous journey starts when Safaan begins his quest to unveil the meanings in that papyrus and his ancestor's story. Directed by Moeez Alrammah (USA)

Submerged

Nadya, a five year-old Russian girl, is soothed by her loving grandmother VERA (65) after waking up from a bad dream, and Vera advises her granddaughter to tell her nightmares to the running water. Fast-forward twelve years, teenage Nadya keeps this advice close to her heart and continues to find solace in a patient stream of water as she whispers her night terrors away. Last night she had dreamt of her grandmother and, worried about Vera’s health, she decides to visit her grandmother. Nadya cares profoundly for Vera and has developed a deeper connection with her over time, despite the fact that the girl rarely visits and has grown apart with her childhood role model. Nadya surprises Vera at her musky, cramped apartment and the two talk, a bit awkwardly, over some tea and sweets. Vera admits that she has not been well for a while.  Later that night, Nadya experiences another nightmare in which she drowns and wakes up gasping for air. She enters the bathroom and whispers to the water, letting her fears, bad thoughts, and negative energy whirl down the drain once again. Meanwhile, Vera prepares to take her medication before going to bed. She pours herself some water from the tap in the kitchen and, after gulping down the meds, notices that the flowers Nadya had brought for her earlier that day have mysteriously wilted and the water turned yellow.  The next morning, Nadya wakes up to a phonecall telling her that Vera has passed. She goes to see her father at Vera’s house, where he covers mirrors around the house in white cloth. After waking up in the middle of the night from yet another nightmare, Nadya goes straight to Vera’s house. She tears the white cloth from a mirror and sees her grandmother, dressed in black, sitting on the bed and silently watching her under a cloudy streak of light.  This story was highly influenced by my personal relationship with my grandmother, who, being highly superstitious, inspired the film’s connections with dreams and talking to water. Her tales have stuck with me throughout the years and, as we’ve grown apart, I’ve connected with her more mentally than physically. Directed by Angie Nicholas (USA)

For While

Inspired by Emma Lazarus’s famed poem welcoming immigrants to the United States, this experimental video short captures small moments of humanity within the quotidian carriage of the NYC subway. Titled in reference to a computational “for” loop, the video poem speaks to the holding pattern we occupy and take passage through—equal in our anonymity, hurriedness and small sufferings. Amid this current era of nationalist scapegoating, we persist in the quiet ethos of multiplicity. We (us) are greater than US in the lived experience of equality and freedom. FOBia

An Indian FOB (Fresh Off the Boat) Kay, arrives in America to go to business school only to be informed by her neighbor Bina (also Indian...but very different from Kay..because..you know.. all immigrants are not the same) that her roommate ran off to be a Hollywood star. Fate conspires to bring Kay and Ashanti (also abandoned at the 11th hour by her roommate) together as roomies - two humans from different worlds. "FOBia" follows the three women as they make their way through cultural misunderstandings and general mayhem. "FOBia" is a comedy that humanizes the immigrant experience. By centering immigrants in this story we actually hear from immigrants rather than just about them. We understand the challenges they go through - big and small. In a time when there is a lot of discussion in America about what immigrants mean to America, FOBia seeks to find out what America means to immigrants. Directed by Reshmi Hazra Rustebakke (USA)
