Independent Shorts Awards has selected Mothers, directed by Choukri Rouha (France), as Best Foreign-Language Short of May 2025, one of the monthly honors that also positions the film as a contender for the festival’s Annual Awards, to be held on September 6 at Regal LA Live in Los Angeles.
A Story of Loss, Connection, and Quiet Encounters
Mothers follows Sabira (Karina Testa), a single mother of Algerian descent living in the suburbs of Paris, whose life is upended when she learns that her 11-year-old son has been fatally injured in an accident. In the aftermath, she is faced with a difficult and urgent decision: whether to authorize the donation of her son’s heart to save the life of another child.

That child is the son of Anna (Catherine Badet), a Jewish woman in her 50s, whose family has been awaiting a transplant at the same hospital. When her son receives the donation, Anna’s relief is mixed with a persistent need to understand the origin of this second chance. Despite legal and ethical boundaries, she begins searching for the donor’s family, eventually leading her to Sabira—though neither initially knows the connection they share.
A Carefully Composed and Emotionally Resonant Short
Choukri Rouha brings a restrained and attentive approach to this emotionally complex subject. The film explores its characters with care, focusing on their interior lives and quiet reactions rather than dramatic outbursts. Cinematography and editing contribute to a sense of intimacy, often relying on close shots and long silences to convey the emotional weight of the story.
Rouha, whose previous work also engages with identity, social belonging, and the experience of families on the margins, shows a continued interest in stories that examine the human side of broader cultural and ethical questions.

Themes of Identity, Grief, and Gratitude
While Mothers touches on themes related to cultural background, migration, and religious identity, these aspects are not foregrounded for political commentary. Instead, they form part of the characters’ lived realities, shaping the way they experience grief, community, and their decisions. The film places emphasis on the individual experiences of two mothers who, despite their differences, are linked by an extraordinary and life-altering event.

The connection between Sabira and Anna unfolds gradually and without resolution that feels forced. This narrative choice allows the film to remain grounded, leaving space for viewers to interpret and reflect on the emotional and ethical dimensions of the story.
A Noteworthy Selection
By honoring Mothers, Independent Shorts Awards highlights a film that approaches its subject with subtlety and respect. The award recognizes not only the film’s storytelling and performances, but also its thoughtful treatment of sensitive issues such as loss, organ donation, and the invisible threads that can connect lives across divides.
