Aphasia, Memory, and Resignation: “Black Sheep” Wins Best Short of April

Independent Shorts Awards is proud to announce Black Sheep, directed by emerging Chinese filmmaker Rongye Xue, as the Best Short of April 2025. Quietly devastating yet profoundly tender, the film offers a moving portrait of a young girl with aphasia, portrayed by child actress Xinqing Wang, as she navigates a world shaped by the quiet tragedy of economic constraint and emotional resignation.

At just 20 years old, Rongye Xue, born in Beijing in 2004, demonstrates a remarkably mature artistic voice. A self-taught filmmaker since 2019, Xue has gained industry experience through various roles—including gaffer, assistant art director, and director’s assistant—on projects ranging from Cannes-recognized shorts to socially conscious public service films. With Black Sheep, he delivers a film that is emotionally restrained yet deeply resonant, exploring the limits of care in a world where financial hardship determines outcomes.

The story centers on Li Qian, a young girl living with aphasia. Her quiet presence radiates a kind of inner beauty and gentle resilience. But behind the tenderness lies a cruel reality: her family lacks the financial means to pursue treatment. The heartbreak is not rooted in neglect, but in a painful acceptance—the understanding that she will one day forget her own condition. It is this layered emotional truth that gives Black Sheep its haunting power.

Cinematographer Zhihao Wen, whose background includes extensive documentary work for National Geographic and China Central Television, brings an intimate visual language to the film. His understated camera work captures not just Li Qian’s quiet world, but the unspoken emotions of those around her—guilt, love, resignation.

Xinqing Wang and Sien Yang in Black Sheep

Black Sheep is not a film of overt drama, but one of subtle revelations. It invites the viewer to reflect on what it means to live with dignity when solutions are out of reach, and when silence becomes a form of protection, or perhaps peace.

Black Sheep has qualified for the 2025 Annual Awards, to be held on September 6 at Regal LA Live in Los Angeles, where the film will be screened.
