Starting in the late-20th century, Manhattan’s Chinatown has served as a critical landing point for new immigrants. Today, it has the largest ethnic Chinese population in the Western hemisphere. GATEWAY TO AMERICA centers the recent protests against the new jail in Chinatown in a history of cross-racial activism and community building in America. As a community that has endured centuries of destruction and discrimination but also strength and solidarity, Manhattan’s Chinatown fights to remain rooted—resisting gentrification and displacement—in the years to come.
