It was not to celebrate Columbus for discovering America, but an appeasement to cover up the atrocity that was committed against Italians in the City of New Orleans This caused tension between the US and Italian goverment who was calling for was against the US. So then President Franklin Harrison proclaimed Christopher Columbus day Oct 21th 1892. The untold story of the largest lynching in US history. The lynching of Eleven Italians in 1891 in New Orleans.
